The Name “Allah”
He is Allah , the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (Al-Hashr 59:27)
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise; and Allah is witr (one) and loves ‘the witr‘ (i.e., odd numbers).” (Al-Bukhari)
Dr. Yasir Qadhi continues his explanation of the Names and Attributes of Allah in light of the Qur’an and the Prophetic traditions. In today’s episode, he reflects on the most common name of our Lord and creator, i.e. Allah. This name is mentioned approximately 3500 times in the Qur’an. It is the very first name and also the last name that is mentioned in the Qur’an. Then, Dr. Yasir briefly mentions the opinions of scholars and jurists regarding the term “Allah”.
After that, he explains the characteristics of the name Allah:
1- This name encompasses all the other names of Allah.
2- Some scholars have said this name, Allah, is referred to by the Prophet (peace be upon him) as the Grand name of Allah, which when used in a supplication is always responded to.
3- The name is very easy to pronounce by the tongue.
4- It has a special “tafkheem” (heaviness) in pronunciation.
5- Over 33 verses begin with the name Allah.
