IN ENGLISH

Al-Habib Alwi bin Muhammad bin Thohir Alhaddad was born in the city of Geidun, Hadhramaut in the year 1299 Hijri.

His ancestral lineage inclusive of the sanad (lineage) of
Dzahabiyyah, is part of the noble lineage of from Rasul S.A.W. Similar
to other Ba’Alawi Families, he was raised and taught by his father
Al-Habib Muhammad bin Thohir bin Umar Alhaddad. His grandfather was the
renowned Al-Habib Thohir bin Umar Alhaddad, one of the great scholars
in the city of Geidun, Hadhramaut.

His father was one of the Great Scholars of his time, regarded as
“Wali min Auliyah”. He made his journey from the city of Geidun,
Hadhramaut to Indonesia and settled in the town of Tegal, Indonesia. He
read and studied many books with/under his father and grandfathers
guidance. He was given various ijazahs by both his father and
grandfather for his proficiency in matters relating to Hadith and
Tafsir (i.e. Ahli Hadith wa Tafsir).

After being taught by his father he sought knowledge from;

  1. As-Syaikh Abdullah bin Abubakar Al-Murahim Al-Khotib (di kota Tarim)
  2. As-Syaikh Abud Botong Al-Amudi (di kota Geidun)

He then journeyed through the various cities in Hadhramaut, seeking
knowledge from Great Scholars he met (some of which have been given the
title “Wali min Auliyah”).
Among whom were,

  2. Al-Habib Umar bin Hadun Al-Atthas (Masyhad)
  3. Al-Habib Ahmad bin Hasan Al-Atthas (Huraidhah)

  5. Al-Habib Umar Maula Amed (Maula Amed)
  6. Al-Habib Abdillah bin Umar bin Sumaith (Syibam)
  7. Al-Habib Abdullah bin Hasan bin Shaleh Al-Bahar (Thi Usbuh)
  8. Al-Habib Abdullah bin Muhammad Al-Habsyi (Hauthoh Ahmad bin Zein)
  9. Al-Habib Idrus bin Umar Al-Habsyi (Seiwun)

At a particular instance, in which the Al-Habib wished to go for
Hajj and to meet Rasulullah S.A.W.. He sought the permission of his
grandfather Al-Habib Thohir bin Umar Alhaddad, and made his journey to
the city of Makkah and Madinah. After fulfilling his initial wishes, he
felt the need to study from the Scholars of the city of Makkan and
Madinah,

He sought knowledge from the following scholars,

  1. As-Syaikh Said Babsail
  2. As-Syaikh Umar bin Abubakar Junaid
  3. Al-Habib Husin bin Muhammad Al-Habsyi (Mufti Syafi’iyah pada masa itu)

After accumulating a substantial amount of (‘ilm’) knowledge from these Great Scholars, he returned to Indonesia.
Upon
his return, he visited the Maqam of his late father, Al-Habib Muhammad
bin Thohir Alhaddad, who passed away in the year 1316 Hijri in the city
of Tegal, Central Java.

He always had a deep drive and willingness to seek knowledge no matter where he was.
It
was a passion that he inculcated from his grandfather, who sought
knowledge till he himself was regarded as one of the Great Scholars of
his time.

Some of the Scholars his learned from in Indonesia were,

  2. Al-Habib Muhammad bin Ahmad Al-Muhdhor (Surabaya)
  3. Al-Habib Abdullah bin Muhsin Al-Atthas (Bogor)
  4. Al-Habib Salim bin Alwi Al-Jufri (Menado)
  5. Al-Habib Idrus bin Husin bin Ahmad Alaydrus (Passed away in India)

The Al-Habib resided in the city of Bogor, Indonesia. He taught and
spread the knowledge that he had gathered, and held Majalis Taklin and
Lectures.
He was renowned as one of the Great Scholars and for his
knowledge of the Hadith. He passed away in the city of Bogor, Indonesia
in the year 1373 Hijri.
He was laid to rest in the city of Empang, Bogor, where his Maqam now resides.

Al-Habib Alwi bin Muhammad bin Thohir Alhaddad dilahirkan di kota Geidun, Hadramaut, pada tahun 1299 H.

Sanad keturunan beliau termasuk suatu silsilah dzahabiyyah,
sambung-menyambung dari ayah yang wali ke kakek wali, demikian
seterusnya sampai bertemu dengan Rasulullah SAW. Sebagaimana kebanyakan
para saadah Bani Alawi, beliau dibesarkan dan dididik oleh ayahnya
sendiri Al-Habib Muhammad bin Thohir bin Umar Alhaddad. Kekak beliau
Al-Habib Thohir bin Umar Alhaddad adalah seorang ulama besar di kota
Geidun, Hadramaut. Sedangkan ayah beliau adalah seorang Wali min
Auliyaillah dan ulama besar yang hijrah dari kota Geidun, Hadramaut ke
Indonesia dan menetap di kota Tegal. Beliau Al-Habib Thohir banyak
membaca buku dibawah pengawasan dan bimbingan ayah dan kakek beliau,
sehingga diberi ijazah oleh ayah dan kakeknya sebagai ahli hadist dan
ahli tafsir.

Setelah digembleng oleh ayahnya, beliau lalu berguru kepada :

  1. As-Syaikh Abdullah bin Abubakar Al-Murahim Al-Khotib (di kota Tarim)
  2. As-Syaikh Abud Botong Al-Amudi (di kota Geidun)

Setelah itu beliau memulai pengembaraannya di sekitar kota-kota di
Hadramaut untuk menuntut ilmu dan menghiasi kemuliaan nasabnya dengan
ilmu-ilmu yang bermanfaat. Beliau keliling dari satu kota ke kota yang
lain untuk mengambil ilmu dari ulama-ulama besar yang beliau jumpai.

Itulah guru-guru beliau yang ada di Hadramaut, dimana mereka semua
kebanyakan adalah ulama-ulama besar dan tidak jarang pula yang termasuk
wali min auliyaillah.

Pada suatu saat, beliau ingin sekali menunaikan ibadah Haji dan lalu
berziarah ke datuk beliau termulia Rasulullah SAW. Setelah mendapat
ijin dari kakek beliau Al-Habib Thohir bin Umar Alhaddad, berangkatlah
beliau menuju ke kota Makkah dan Madinah. Setelah beliau menunaikan
keinginannya, timbullah niat beliau untuk belajar dari para ulama besar
yang ada di dua kota suci tersebut.

Lalu beliau menuntut ilmu disana dengan berguru kepada :

  1. As-Syaikh Said Babsail
  2. As-Syaikh Umar bin Abubakar Junaid
  3. Al-Habib Husin bin Muhammad Al-Habsyi (Mufti Syafi’iyah pada masa itu)

Setelah dirasa cukup menuntut ilmu disana, timbullah keinginan
beliau untuk berhijrah ke Indonesia, sebagaimana yang dilakukan
sebelumnya oleh ayah beliau Al-Habib Muhammad. Sesampailah beliau di
Indonesia, beliau lalu berziarah ke makam ayah beliau Al-Habib Muhammad
bin Thohir Alhaddad yang wafat di kota Tegal, Jawa Tengah, pada tahun
1316 H.

Keinginan beliau untuk selalu menuntut ilmu seakan tak pernah luntur
dan pupus terbawa jaman. Inilah salah satu kebiasaan beliau untuk
selalu mencari dan mencari ilmu dimanapun beliau berada. Tidaklah yang
demikian itu, kecuali beliau mencontoh para Datuk beliau yang gemar
menuntut ilmu, sehingga mereka bisa menjadi ulama-ulama besar. Diantara
para guru beliau yang ada di Indonesia adalah :

  1. Al-Habib Muhammad bin Idrus Al-Habsyi (di Surabaya)
  2. Al-Habib Muhammad bin Ahmad Al-Muhdhor (di Surabaya, yang kemudian beliau dikawinkan dengan anaknya)
  3. Al-Habib Abdullah bin Muhsin Al-Atthas (di Bogor)
  4. Al-Habib Salim bin Alwi Al-Jufri (menetap di Menado)
  5. Al-Habib Idrus bin Husin bin Ahmad Alaydrus (wafat di India dalam dakwahnya)

Di Indonesia, beliau memilih untuk menetap di kota Bogor. Disana
beliau berdakwah dan menyebarkan ilmu-ilmu yang bermanfaat. Beliau
dikenal sebagai seorang ulama besar dan ahli hadits. Di kota Bogor
beliau banyak mengadakan majlis-majlis taklim dan mengajarkan tentang
Al-Islam. Sampai akhirnya beliau dipanggil oleh Allah menuju ke
haribaan-Nya. Beliau wafat di kota Bogor tahun 1373 H dan dimakamkan di
Empang, Bogor.
